WeRize secured $7 million in its latest pre-Series C funding round led by Sony Innovation
WeRize funding round shows $7 million pre-Series C investment led by Sony Innovation Partners supporting fintech expansion in India.

SUMMARY

WeRize is an AI-powered social distribution fintech platform. WeRize has raised $7 million in its pre-Series C round. The Sony Innovation Fund led the investment. 3one4 Capital was also active during the funding round. The fresh capital injection marks the WeRize-as-a-financial-services-marketplace’s total equity capital raised to exceed the $28 million mark, reflecting strong institutional support for the company’s financial services marketplace.

Capital utilization and the aim of WeRize

This also comes just after an exclusive report from Entrackr in March suggesting that the startup would likely slam-dunk nearly ₹64 crore (approximately $6.9 million). This is the first significant round of capital the company has closed since successfully raising $15.5 million in a pre-Series C round that closed at a valuation of $115 million in June 2022.

The previous round also saw support from British International Investment, Sony Innovation Fund, and other existing investors. The consistent capital inflows reflect the company’s ongoing expansion and recognition in the digital financial services space. The newly acquired $7 million will be invested in strengthening the company’s technical foundation and expanding its portfolio of marketplace solutions, according to a company press statement.

A significant amount of the fund will be allocated to the development and scaling of WeRize’s own proprietary artificial intelligence and overall technology stack. The company has stated that by strengthening its core data engines, it aims to streamline its automated processes, risk assessment algorithms, and distribution strategies to better suit consumer requirements.

The fresh capital will be used to expand into new financial categories, according to the startup. It aims to launch different investment products, such as mutual funds and online bonds, offering users an overall asset management space.

Besides investment opportunities, WeRize is also planning to introduce secured co-branded credit cards and housing loans. With this expansion, the company will become a more holistic financial center that will serve at various points in the lifecycle of a consumer’s financial needs.

Operational efficiency and scalability

WeRize was established to create a highly customisable financial ecosystem for small cities in India. The platform serves as a social distribution AI fintech platform for more than 4000 Tier II to Tier IV towns and a population of over 300 million individuals. The company intentionally focuses on a large critical credit and savings need by distributing and offering a personalised financial portfolio of credit, insurance, and savings products designed for the ‘underbanked’ population.

For all this to be able to be achieved in an efficient way, WeRize is a specific three-sided full wallet alternative. The infrastructure reaches more than 300 million consumers in underserved small cities and more than 19,000 trained local financial micro-entrepreneurs.

Such partner institutions are also connected to leading financial institutions like partner banks, Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs), mutual funds, and insurance companies. The entire ecosystem is united by a proprietary AI layer, which enables the platform to offer cross-functional financial services in over 5,000 cities and towns without a single physical branch and seamlessly navigate 6 Indian languages.

WeRize’s operational efficiency and scalability stem from its core advanced and proprietary AI-stack, which has been carefully developed on more than 20 billion distinct data points collected from over 4 million households in 5,000 cities. This massive amount of regional financial data feeds all three sides of the complete marketplace that the company offers.

The AI distribution stack effectively manages optimised lead generations, offers essential tools for assisting partners in sales, and supports long-lasting life-cycle engagements with partners and end consumers. In the back end of the product manufacturing side of the market, the AI engine manages essential processes such as underwriting and risk selection.

Utilising data intelligence and automation, WeRize can construct and produce bespoke group insurance plans, customised credit options, and a smaller print specific saving plan, accurately mirroring the risk profile and repayment capability of the small town consumer. This technology-driven approach reduces the cost of directly owning and operating traditional branch networks without compromising on the quality of risk mitigation.

Conclusion

The investment of $7 million by the Sony Innovation Fund helped consolidate WeRize’s presence in the Indian fintech sector as a strong, high-growth entity. The company has secured backing from Tier-1 global companies and existing investments from large investors such as 3one4 Capital, which have since proved to be steady support for the long-term adoption of the company’s social distribution branchless and AI system.

WeRize has raised more than $28 million in total funding, built a financial micro-entrepreneur network of 19,000, and is positioned for clear expansion plans for housing finance and mutual funds.
