PM Modi calls for India–Jordan economic partnership

SUMMARY

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the significance of fostering a  long-term and sustainable partnership between India and Jordan, emphasizing the  robust trade relations and shared historical connections that bind the two nations.  During his address at the India–Jordan Business Meet in Amman, PM Modi noted that  India stands as Jordan’s third-largest trading partner and stressed the need for the  relationship to transcend mere statistics, aiming instead for lasting cooperation and  mutual advancement.

Prime Minister said “In the realm of business, figures are important, but our aim is not  solely to tally trade numbers. We are here to forge a long-lasting relationship” . He  reminisced about ancient trade routes, recalling how commerce once traversed from  Gujarat to Europe via Petra. “We must revive these historic links to clear the path for our  prosperity in the future.” he added.

PM Modi also acknowledged Jordan’s strategic position in the region, describing it as a  crucial bridge connecting various geographies. Under King Abdullah II’s leadership,  Jordan has established itself as a key ally in regional collaboration. The Prime Minister  mentioned that he engaged in comprehensive discussions with Jordanian leaders on  transforming geographical advantages into opportunities and subsequently into  economic growth.

India as an Engine of Global Growth

Emphasizing India’s robust economic trajectory, PM Modi stated that the country is  experiencing growth exceeding 8 percent, propelled by productivity, effective  governance, and innovation-driven policies. He highlighted that India’s economic  dynamism is creating new avenues for global investors, including those from Jordan.

“Today, the world is in search of a new growth engine and dependable, trustworthy  supply chains,” he noted. “Jordan and India working together can be crucial in meeting  this worldwide need.” He further mentioned that India’s expanding manufacturing  sector, digital public infrastructure, and reform-oriented policies present enticing  opportunities for Jordanian enterprises.

Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation

Earlier this week, India and Jordan formalized several Memorandums of Understanding  (MoUs) aimed at bolstering bilateral relations. These agreements cover important topics  including digital public infrastructure, water management, renewable energy, culture and a collaborative initiative between the historic sites of Petra in Jordan and Ellora in  India. The initiatives are designed to enhance people-to-people connections while  promoting cooperation in strategic and sustainable sectors.

PM Modi characterized the MoUs as a significant stride towards enhancing economic  collaboration, technological exchange, and cultural exchange between the two  countries.

Trade, Diaspora, and Strategic Importance

The Prime Minister arrived in Amman on Monday for an official two-day visit at the  invitation of King Abdullah II. Jordan is the first destination on his four-day, three-nation  tour, which also includes Ethiopia and Oman.

Currently, bilateral trade between India and Jordan is valued at approximately USD 2.8  billion. Jordan is essential in providing India’s agricultural sector, particularly as a  primary supplier of fertilizers like phosphates and potash.

Beyond trade, the substantial presence of the Indian diaspora in Jordan enriches the  relationship further. Over 17,500 Indians reside and work in the country, contributing  across various sectors, including textiles, construction, and manufacturing. PM Modi

recognised their contribution to bolstering people-to-people ties and serving as a living  bridge between the two nations.

Conclusion

In conclusion, PM Modi reaffirmed India’s dedication to enhancing economic, cultural,  and strategic cooperation with Jordan. He expressed that by building on historical  connections, aligning business interests, and focusing on future-oriented sectors, India  and Jordan can cultivate a partnership that yields long-term benefits for both countries  and positively impacts regional and global growth.
