India to Double Electricity’s Share in Total Energy Mix to 45-50% by 2047, Says Shri Ghanshyam Prasad, Chairperson, CEA at Bharat Electricity 2026
SUMMARY
New Delhi, 2nd September 2026: “Electricity currently accounts for just 22% of India’s total energy consumption. To reach Net Zero and support the nation’s economic transformation, the power sector is tasked with expanding this share to 45-50% by 2047, taking on the growing loads of industry, mobility, and digital infrastructure,” said Shri Ghanshyam Prasad, Chairperson, Central Electricity Authority (CEA), at Bharat Electricity, POWERGEN India & Indian Utility Week 2026 at Yashobhoomi (IICC).
Organised by The Energy & Climate Initiatives Society (ENCIS), the three-day event from 01-03 September 2026 brings together more than 15,000 professionals, over 250 exhibitors, and 150 global thought leaders representing 40 countries.
Highlighting the sector’s unprecedented momentum, Shri Prasad noted, “Last year, India added a record 64,000 MW of new capacity, with more than 50,000 MW coming from renewables alone. This year, we are likely to surpass even that, targeting up to 70,000 MW of fresh additions. By 2035, India is poised to double its 2030 renewables target, reach 100 GW of pumped hydro storage by 2035-36, and achieve 100 GW of nuclear power by 2047. Our roadmap is ambitious but necessary to ensure reliable, affordable, and clean electricity for all.”
Shri Prasad further emphasised the importance of systemic innovation: “We have ₹4 lakh crore ($40 billion) in transmission projects underway to evacuate 266 GW, and are planning 600 GVA of transformation capacity. Our goal is to provide grid connectivity for new renewables within 24-36 months, even as we integrate new types of demand from data centers, hydrogen, and electric vehicles.”
He called on the industry to ensure supply chain resilience, urging, “With such phenomenal growth, it is essential to avoid supply chain disruptions, whether for transformers, reactors, or advanced grid equipment. We must also champion innovation, from mobile substations and SF6-free solutions to advanced forecasting and AI for grid stability.”
Dr. D Sai Baba, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Power, Government of Indi, said, “India has already crossed 300 GW of non-fossil installed capacity, and we now have ₹4 lakh crore of transmission projects underway to evacuate 266 GW of clean energy. Our challenge is to convert this renewable capacity into reliable, affordable power at the right place and time, building a grid that is resilient, flexible, and ready for the future.”
The exhibition showcases breakthroughs in grid modernisation, artificial intelligence, digital utilities, green hydrogen, battery storage, cybersecurity, and workforce transformation, with over 25 expert-led knowledge sessions and live demonstrations.
Shri P.K. Pujari, IAS (Retd.), Honorary Chairperson of ENCIS, highlighted, “India’s electricity sector is moving beyond simply adding capacity; our next leap is reimagining the grid itself, from fossil-heavy and centralised to renewable-rich, decentralised, and digitally enabled. The focus now is on building flexibility, integrating smart technologies, and creating a grid that empowers consumers and delivers clean, affordable energy for all.”
Guided by the theme “Shaping Energy Sovereignty • Building Climate Resilience • Powering Viksit Bharat,” Bharat Electricity, POWERGEN India & Indian Utility Week 2026 is more than a showcase; it is a catalyst for next-generation energy solutions, manufacturing, and global collaboration.
On Day 1 of the summit, a range of pivotal sessions took place, beginning with the Inaugural Session on “Energy Sovereignty for a Climate-Resilient Viksit Bharat.” This was followed by the Opening Plenary discussing “India’s Power System Roadmap 2047: Security, Scale & Sustainability” and a session on “The Hidden Asset-Life Cost of Flexible Operations.” The day continued with an engaging panel on “Transmission Bottlenecks & Grid Evacuation, Generation and Demand-Side Flexibility & Storage,” as well as a focused Delhi State Session titled “Powering the Capital: Delhi’s Roadmap for Clean Energy, Smart Grids & Sustainable Urban Growth.”
There was a technical session on “Tackling India’s Renewable Energy Curtailment,” an International Plenary on “Energy Diplomacy 2.0: Strategic Alliances for the Net-Zero Era,” and presentations on “Maximising Generation with AI-Powered Digital Twins” and “Toshiba’s Digital Transformation for Flexible Thermal Power Plants.” A Markets Plenary explored “Reimagining Electricity Markets: Enabling Flexibility, Investment & Grid Stability,” and technical discussions covered “Kirloskar’s Approach to Pumping Solutions for Conventional Nuclear Plants and SMRs” as well as “Energy Storage for India: From Research to Demonstration and Commercialisation.” The day concluded with the prestigious “Bharat Electricity Awards,” celebrating excellence in the sector.
