SUMMARY

InspeCity has raised ₹100 crore (approximately $10.5 million) in a pre-Series A funding round. Speciale Invest and Ashish Kacholia led the funding round. Other investors who actively participated in the strategic investment round were Antler Elevate, Antler India, Manish Gandhi, and Shastra VC.

Capital deployment and core technological innovations

The milestone follows the startup’s successes in securing investment funds. Earlier, InspeCity’s lead round of seed funding last May was headed by Ashish Kacholia with the backing of Speciale Invest, Shastra VC, Antler India, DeVC, MGF-Kavachh and Anicut Capital, totaling $5.6 million (approximately ₹46 crore). 

The startup raised $1.5 million in a pre-seed round led by Speciale Invest and other investors prior to that seed round. The increased fresh funds will be primarily used to continue the flight qualification process and scale commercial operations, as InspeCity stated in an official press release. 

Established in 2022 by Arindrajit Chowdhury, the space-tech firm is known for creating ISAM technologies. The general objective of the firm is aimed at increasing the life of satellites along with addressing the problem of space debris.

The startup is increasingly pursuing the Vehicle for Life-Extension and Deorbiting Activities (VEDA) to meet these goals. VEDA is an independent in-space serving architecture used to provide progressively more advanced in-space servicing operations to extend the life of satellites. In order to accomplish this, InspeCity has systematically deconstructed satellite life extension into essential capabilities for autonomous operation in space.

InspeCity has developed a comprehensive set of proprietary technologies as the building blocks that underlie its orbital mission. Among these innovations is GITA (Green Impulse TrAnsmitter), a critical spacecraft propulsion and mobility solution. 

The startup has developed a new AI-powered satellite-tracking sensor unit, named CHAKSU (Comprehensive AI-enabled satellite-tracking Sensor Unit), dedicated to situational awareness, navigation, and proximity operations. The startup uses RAMA (Remotely Actuated Motorized Arm), a specialized robotic arm designed to handle complex robotic tasks, for mechanical manipulation in orbit. 

The startup has created SPARSH (Self-aligning Port for Autonomous Refueling and Satellite Housekeeping), which allows for cooperative docking and in-orbit fueling. These individual technologies constitute the structural skeleton of advanced orbital platforms such as Remote Inspection and Guidance (RIG), VEDA, and Space-Based Maintenance Asset (SAMA).

In-orbit mission roadmap

InspeCity has outlined an ambitious flight path for the coming 12 to 18 months. The company intends to perform 4 in-orbit missions in accordance with its mission operational plan: RIG-X, VEDA-X, SAMA-X. InspeCity plans a series of strategically placed space flights for progressively testing propulsion, sensing, autonomous operation, robotics, docking, and refuelling directly in the outer space environment. InspeCity’s funding period follows recent trends in Indian space-tech startup funding, where other notable players have also joined in distributing significant capital.
