Anurag Jain, entrepreneur and alumnus of Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, has donated $1 million to the school as substantial seed funding. This substantial donation is designated for the formation of a new Center of Excellence for research, innovation, and education in advanced materials within the institute’s Goa Campus. This special facility would take many years and millions of dollars to build.

The AMRIT – Anurag Jain Materials Research and Innovation Center of Excellence aims to provide a shared platform for students, academic researchers, industry experts, international academic collaborators, and entrepreneurs. The primary goal of the center will be to grow scientific understanding and to translate initial scientific discoveries into commercially marketable products.

Technological applications and strategic alignment

The AMRIT Center will focus on research in two-dimensional and functional materials as its primary focus at the beginning. The objective of this research has broad practical applications in several important technology areas. 

These involve advanced battery and supercapacitor technologies, hydrogen production systems, fuel cells, PV generation, and capture, utilisation, and storage options for CO₂. The research will focus on the cutting-edge developments in semiconductors, sensor technologies, and other directionally relevant applications.

Anurag Jain, who belongs to the Batch of 1988 from BITS Pilani, is the chairman of Access Healthcare, which is an international platform providing health care services, and is also the co-founder of Perot Jain, a venture capital firm based in Dallas that invests in AI, robotics, and computer vision technology.

He previously held the position of President of Dell Services and Perot Systems. In addition to his business interests, Jain is chairman emeritus of the North Texas Food Bank and a co-founder of Get Shift Done.

Professor V. Ramgopal Rao, Vice-Chancellor of BITS Pilani, said, “Advanced materials are foundational to many of the technologies India is seeking to build—from batteries and hydrogen systems to semiconductors and sensors. Too often, promising materials research remains confined to the laboratory. The AMRIT Center will pursue cutting-edge research with a clear path toward practical application, improved manufacturing processes, and commercialization. It will also educate and train hundreds of researchers, engineers, and specialists for careers in academia and industry.”

Anurag Jain said, “India has an extraordinary opportunity to become a global leader in advanced materials and the transformative technologies they enable.
