IDFC FIRST Bank partnered with IIM Calcutta Innovation Park to launch a ₹2 crore startup incubation program
SUMMARY
IDFC FIRST Bank has signed a strategic partnership with the IIM Calcutta Innovation Park to launch a pan-India incubation programme on Sustainable Business Solutions. This is an initiative under IGNITE, a flagship startup incubation initiative of the IDFC FIRST Bank under the scheme FIRST IMPACT designed to support startups in an early-stage position who focuses on resolving environmental problems.
The primary objective of the collaboration is to provide companies in the startup phase with a high potential the financial, strategic, and operational support necessary for building sustainable ideas into a commercialized operation on the national stage.
Financial allocation and key area of focus
The newly introduced programme includes a financial commitment of ₹2 crore to promote growth of the startup ecosystem. A substantial portion of this fund comprises a direct startup grant corpus of ₹1.36 crore for supporting participating ventures.
This capital deployment is intended to aid in building the core business models of the emerging ventures, rapid development of their offerings, accessing the market, and making a concrete impact on the environment and society. The high-performing companies within the batch will also qualify for performance-based funding to further scale up their business operations.
The project focuses on businesses in sectors which are considered essential for tackling critical national environmental issues. The most prominent subjects of interest are green manufacturing, characterized by its focus on energy-efficient processes, reduced carbon emissions, and resource optimization in industrial manufacturing.
The program also emphasizes recycling and upcycling ventures that take waste from agriculture and various sectors of the industry and transform it into a marketable commercial product and help reduce landfill waste.
Clean technologies will form a critical part of the initiative, covering renewable energy technologies, wastewater management, air purification technologies, as well as climate-resilient innovations. It is another key aspect of the initiative that involves helping in utilizing local and indigenous resources in a sustainable way through establishing startups involving combining local raw materials and indigenous expertise with new skill sets and expertise.
Environmental impact and incubation framework
At the national level, a panel of 16 startups will be selected under this program after a multi-stage competitive evaluation process. Eligibility is based on the entity’s registration in India, its operation in India, and one of its founders being a citizen of India. Eligible entities must be organizations that have incorporated in the past 10 years and have a functional prototype or MVI representing at least Technology Readiness Level 4 (TRL 4).
The selected candidates will undertake a 9-month incubation process, well-positioned and facilitated by the Innovation Park of IIM Calcutta. It entails in-depth business diagnostics, tailor-made bootcamps, master classes, one-on-one mentoring sessions, market access, pricing, and pitching training to facilitate investment readiness of their ventures.
The partnership effort seeks to provide tangible results by economic, social and environmental criteria. The programme is designed to help 16 sustainable solutions scale commercially, and to boost general operational readiness of the chosen enterprises through direct grant provision and access to the programme’s ecosystem.
In terms of business, the concept is aimed at generating fresh sources of income, market traction, and local employment from among the startups. From the environmental angle, it is expected to foster resource efficiency, diverting waste from landfills, climate resilience, and a strong and innovative sustainability ecosystem for India.
