Mitti Labs raised $9.5 million in a Series A financing round to provide a solution to environmental and water issues in rice farming in Asia. Aramco Ventures led the funding round. The investment witnessed strong support from investors such as Lightspeed India, Godrej Industries Group, Cisco Foundation, Francis Family Fund, and Volta Circle, among other venture partners.

This new round of funding brings Mitti Labs’ total to $12.5 million, highlighting the increasing investor confidence in sustainable food production systems and technology to address global resource shortages.

Major hurdles and water shortages in rice cultivation

Rice is an important staple food accounting for 50% of the daily diet of the worldwide population. Conventional rice practices have a significant environmental impact on global water systems and the atmosphere. Rice production is known as the world’s most water-intensive crop, accounting for more than 30% of the world’s use of irrigation water. 

In conventional farming, fields are constantly flooded, and this leads to anaerobic conditions generating large amounts of methane. Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas responsible for almost 33% of the current warming of the climate system. The potential impact comes with the use of science-backed alternative irrigation methods, which can help to cut water use by nearly 40% and methane emissions by more than 50%, without compromising the volume of food produced with precision and rigor.

One of the most significant challenges for the modernization of rice production comes from the form of agricultural land ownership in developing countries. Data on rice farming practices, production, water use, and GHGs released during small farm cultivation are typically lacking, and most global rice is grown on small, dispersed plots of less than 2 hectares. 

To address this data gap, the team at Mitti Labs created a proprietary, NASA-supported GeoAI toolset. The platform places high-resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite data, field data, and physical models together to produce digital twins of Asian rice fields at the level of individual plots. The artificial intelligence system uses complex radar information to provide clear information about soil moisture levels, crop health, and localized flooding patterns.

Operational scale and geographical expansion

To convert technological insights into actual environmental impact, Mitti Labs comprises a farmer-centric operating structure that supports the penetration of Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) irrigation practices in the field. The organization has grown to 150 employees and set the benchmark for the largest AWD rice program in the world since 2023. 

Through these field initiatives, more than 500 billion liters of water have been saved, equivalent to the city of Bengaluru’s annual water demand. The fresh investment from this Series A round will enable Mitti Labs to enhance its geographic footprint across India and also launch greenfield agriculture projects in the Philippines and Indonesia. This technological model has garnered significant support from venture investors.
