Airbound is a Bengaluru-based autonomous logistics and delivery drone startup. Airbound has raised $37 million in a Series A funding round. The investment was led by Greenoaks. The investment round also included DoorDash Labs, Lachy Groom, Lightspeed, and Humba Ventures.

With this new infusion of funds, Airbound has raised close to $50 million in total. The startup had earlier raised $8.65 million during a seed funding round in October last year that was led by Lightspeed and Humba Ventures.

Fund utilization and intellectual property

This newly acquired capital will be used to build engineering capabilities, scale commercial manufacturing, and progress to market initiatives. The capital infusions received by Airbound are part of a larger trend in India’s venture capital ecosystem that companies with proprietary technology and intellectual property are getting a thumbs-up from investors, particularly from the deeptech sphere. 

Within the overall decline in deals, venture capital firms are showing up with large investments of capital behind deeptech innovations. Startup intelligence platform Tracxn reports that total funding in deeptech has reached $2.2 billion with 187 deals already completed in 2026. 

Compared with 2025, when deeptech startups raised $1.6 billion over 487 deals, representing a change. The change represents a fundamental rethinking among investors, with an increased focus on companies offering high dollar-value technology-high tech businesses over multiple transactions.

Technological approach and commercial deployment agreements

Airbound is currently making concerted efforts to move its technology to commercial production stages in India. The company recently inked a commercial deployment contract with the government of Andhra Pradesh to set up a 3-city drone delivery network. 

The purpose of this network is to facilitate logistics transport to become faster and cheaper, and the long-term goal is to expand the service to 10,000 flights per day, addressing retail, e-commerce, and healthcare markets. In India, the complexity is high because consumer expectations are high, and timelines for delivery at the doorstep are 10 minutes and the minimum cost. 

The essence of Airbound’s technical design is a reimagining of the structure of traditional aircraft, optimized exclusively for carrying payload. Usually, the design of the conventional aircraft creates a vehicle system that is significantly heavier than the load carried. For instance, a special normed car for 1 passenger or about 100 kg of payload generally has a weight of approximately 400 kg, not including fuel and payload. 

In contrast, Airbound’s aircraft are designed to be unmanned, lighter, and smaller than the cargo they are meant to transport. Airbound’s unique weight distribution, achieved by switching the traditional load distribution, further positions the application and electronics to be the heavier part of the aircraft during flight, which results in max efficiency and lower delivery costs.
