Elon Musk Raises $6 Billion for His AI Startup to Rival OpenAI

Musk created an artificial intelligence startup 10 months ago intending to let researchers work on  existential problems. He also mentioned joining the startup with widely known social Media platform  X (formerly known as Twitter). Later On, xAI unveiled an AI chatbot exclusively available for X’s  premium subscribers known as Grok. xAI is a startup company working on building artificial  intelligence to accelerate human scientific discovery focusing on the mission to advance collective  understanding of the universe.

$6B funding for a startup may sound a bit unbelievable but looking at the technical team members  you will know the reason why investors are trusting them with their money. “Grok” The AI chatbot  available in X (formerly known as Twitter) for premium users in partnership with xAI was developed  very fast. The reason is simple it is the very in-demand team of the absolute best programmers  working with Musk. Now let’s take a little peek into members working for xAI. The startup is led by none other than Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX. Other technical team members have also  worked at DeepMind, OpenAI, Google Research, Microsoft Research, Tesla, and the University of  Toronto. All these innovative techniques and analyses such as Transformer-XL, Autoformalization, the  Memorizing Transformer, Batch Size Scaling, μTransfer, and SimCLR were introduced by these  members. In addition, they have worked on and led the development of some of the largest  breakthroughs in the field including AlphaCode, Inception, GPT-3.5, and GPT-4. Now you know why  everyone wanted to get a share in this “startup”.

With X already being a shareholder, the deal for xAI was originally supposed to raise up to $3B, but  due to a sudden perk of interest from investors and the general public, the price was raised. The  startup is said to be raising $6B on a pre-money valuation of $18B. The deal for investors to get a  quarter of the company will be closing soon. In addition, Jared Birchall the known head of Musk’s family office told investors about xAI raising $3B at a pre-money valuation of $15B a few weeks ago.  However, a sudden rise in investors trying to get into the deal got those numbers doubled. According  to Financial Times Musk is looking for up to $6 billion in funding.

Everyone knows by now that the main objective of xAI is to connect the digital and physical worlds,  but not many know that Musk planned to do this by getting training data from each of his own  companies including X, SpaceX, Neuralink, and Tesla. X(Twitter) is already a shareholder of xAI and  has an AI chatbot named Grok as explained earlier. Another investor would be Tesla, they have been  working with AI for a long time focusing on “ self-driving cars”, and “Optimus “The humanoid robot designed by Tesla”. Tesla has some specific use cases and that Tesla data is valuable, now whether the shareholders of Tesla will allow sharing of data or not is a whole other story, but Elon in general  wants to use the data of these companies for the xAI. X also owns a share in xAI which means the  overall performance of xAI will automatically help the social-media platform’s boost up.

Musk co-founded Open AI in 2015 but left the board after 4 years due to some disagreements. And  later on, OpenAI became the fastest-growing startup in history. The rivalry between the two is  publicly known by many as Musk once sued OpenAI’s CEO for moving from their original “non-profit” goal to “for-profit”. Last month Elon open-sourced the architecture of Grok-1 (the earliest chatbot for  xAI), which was another step for Musk to distinguish his efforts from Open AI.

Conclusion:

Elon Musk’s AI startup, established just 10 months ago, aims to address existential challenges  through advanced AI research. With a collaboration with X (formerly Twitter), xAI aims to connect digital and physical worlds. The $6 billion funding, is backed by an exceptional technical team,  including members from DeepMind, OpenAI, and Google Research. Musk’s strategic vision of utilizing  training data from his companies underscores the ambitious goals of xAI. As the funding round nears  closure, the industry awaits the transformative impact of xAI’s endeavors under Musk’s leadership.

When and how did you start?

After spending 17 years in California and learning about the impact of activity-based learning on children’s potential for school and beyond, we decided to launch our startup in educational toys and games space in May 2017. Our focus was mainly to bridge the gap in the Indian market with high-quality educational games and toys to nurture natural curiosity and creativity, Says Mr Manish Joshi Founder and CEO “Zigyasaw”.

How did you come up with the idea? Your inspirational moment

We were in California for 17 years. When my elder daughter was about 7-8 years old, she was very fond of Origami. To our surprise, one day she asked if she could sell her origami flowers and she sold one for 25 cents. That triggered a passion for business for the family.

When our younger daughter was 2.5 years old, she would sit for hours and try to put the giant floor puzzle about various states in the US. At the time, she could not read. By the time she was 3.5 years old, to everyone’s surprise, she knew all 50 states in the US and what they were known for. I thought that that was fascinating. She would do the world map puzzle with her grandparents and they all would have a great time putting it together. Her grandma would ask how we come to the US from India, what airlines we fly, what routes we take, what countries we visit en route, etc.

What is Zigyasaw?

“Zigyasaw” is derived from the Indian word Jigyasa meaning “Curiosity” and Jigsaw Puzzles. Zigyasaw is committed to creating a screen-free childhood for kids and has been designing and making a premium selection of Educational Puzzles, Flashcards, and other Learning items to foster Curiosity, Creativity, Skills, and more in Children. Our products from Zigyasaw cultivate a sense of learning and build confidence as they help to bring out a child’s potential.

Then we would buy the floor puzzles available in the market. I thought being an Indian parent, it would be a great idea to explain to her about India and Maharashtra through similar means. Every year, we would visit India during vacations and look out for similar puzzles in the Indian context.

There were puzzles, but very small pieces and not great quality. This is why we decided to do it ourselves. We did a lot of research and talked to a lot of folks. Finally found a partner in our family. My brother-in-law who is an alumnus of JJ School of Arts, Mumbai, also runs a creative ads agency in Pune. Quickly he was on board and Zigyasaw was born. We were thinking about naming the company CurioCity.com or QurioCity.com. Those domains were taken. Jigyasaw means curiosity in Indian languages. We combined that with jigsaw. Hence the name ZIGYASAW

The detailed journey, like what all you want to share with readers.

In addition to the story mentioned above in 02, we found that initially there were not a lot of takers for our products since the quality was high in price sensitive Indian market. Our initial customers were families and friends. Slowly word of mouth started getting spread. We reached out to distributors, retailers, online marketplaces, and schools. Found out there are different channels to distribute our products. Online was relatively easy. Started with Amazon.in (India), Flipkart, firstcry in 2018 and then launched on Amazon.com in the US in Sept 2019.

Around Dec 2022, we appointed our national distributor in Gurugram, HR for offline. Slowly and steadily we started growing and repeat orders started coming from metros, tier 2 and 3 cities. We plan to diversify and reach out to other geographies such as Europe and Middle East and Australia. Our products are compliant with all international safety standards such as ASTM F963, EN 71, Gulf Mark, and BIS.

We started getting direct feedback from our growing customers and reviews were very heartwarming. It was good to see what we experienced as parents, our growing customer base also experiencing. Our products help families spend time together, and make learning fun and hours of pure screen-free fun.

Challenges and Opportunities/ Marketing Strategies

Our big competitors have started noticing us and copying our bestsellers, plus the growing online gaming industry is always a challenge. But there is no substitute for offline play especially in early childhood years. We want to stay focused and add value.

Your hook-up point, if any (something unexceptional you have done for your startup)

After spending 22+ years in IT, quit my job and dived full-time into my startup not looking back. Got into product design, and learned everything from scratch despite not having a family business background formal education, or an MBA in business functions.

Provide some statistics like revenues and the number of clients you worked with.

Have 80 K+ customers in India and the US. In the US alone, we have more than 20K customers now. We get orders from the length and breadth of India from different and diverse backgrounds families

From Founder’s Desk

After forming the company in May 2017, our first goal was to come up with a list of subjects for the puzzles. After doing a lot of research about the marketplace and puzzles in general, we realized that a lot of companies do puzzles of princesses, spider-man, Iron Man, Motu Patlu, or some comic characters. I recall when my elder was 9 years old, one day she said, Daddy, I have realized that there is no such thing as a princess and real life is so different. She also said now I know who the real Santa is. That was touching.
Given this context, I thought we should select subjects based on life and social skills for our puzzles. So, children can relate to real-life scenarios and situations. Around the same time, my little girl Radha was 5 years old and she was in prep II or Senior KG in Sesame Street preschool, Pimple Saudagar Pune. One day she learned about different seasons in the school. She came home and drew a picture of seasons like below. She showed that to me and said, Daddy can we make a puzzle of this? I thought that was a terrific idea. We created a brief for our artists and gave Radha’s picture as a guideline… We named this puzzle “Beautiful Seasons”… It has become “Amazon’s Choice” and one of our bestsellers. See the making of this puzzle in the below pictures…

#ZigyasawIndiaPuzzle

Around Dec 2014, we were grappling with some family issues. My little one was 2.5 years and we were constantly struggling to keep her away from screens. Could already see the impact of the screen on her. She used to be cranky and agitated at times. At that time, one of our family friends gifted us a US map puzzle from Melissa and Doug. Both of us used to put together that puzzle. It was a giant size puzzle and our little girl just used to love putting it together. Slowly, we started realizing the benefits of puzzles. She would sit for an hour or two to put it together. Her focus and attention span would improve. Once it was done, expressions on her face were priceless.. as if she had achieved something. She used to clean up the puzzle and put it again. This went on for a few weeks. We both used to have interactive conversations about each state and what it is known for, etc. By the time she was 4 years old, she knew all the 50 states. We were pleasantly surprised and proud. We started looking for similar puzzles and would buy those to keep her interested. One day, it just occurred, being an Indian and Maharashtrian parent, I thought it would be great if she knew about our roots and culture through similar means. Every year, we would come to India during Summer vacations and look for such puzzles. What we found were very cheap quality puzzles. We bought a couple of those.

She was never interested in those. She would say.. not interested, parts are not fitting properly, pictures are not very clear, etc.. I realized she was talking about smaller pieces and the poor quality of the board that’s used. I as a parent was upset and thought she may lose interest. Then sometime in March 2016, I met my bro-in-law in Pune. He is an alumnus of JJ School of Arts and we decided to do this puzzle manufacturing ourselves. My father-in-law suggested we should do the Maharashtra puzzle as May 1st was approaching (May 1st is Maharashtra day). Looking into the manufacturing logistics of a large-size puzzle, we were a little skeptical. Kundan (my brother-in-law) listened quietly and did not say anything.

I was to return to the US on May 9th, he called me to his office and gave me the Maharashtra puzzle. He wanted to surprise. Yes, we could do it. It was simply mind-blowing. And my little girl was happy to do this puzzle. Again, within a few weeks, she knew all districts in Maharashtra, our place Sangli, Jat, and our friends’ places too…My grandparents were happy to see their US-born grandchild was slowly getting connected to the roots and proud of it. The next step was manufacturing our first lot and we paid special attention to the India puzzle as we really wanted our own children to know more about India and its Heritage. A brief was created to include stuff about our culture along with geographical information, monuments, our festivals, etc. Our creative team threw shades of blue (the Indian sports team jersey is blue) and colors in the national flag.

Now, my little one is 7 years old and she knows all states of India and our neighboring countries. Slowly started realizing the benefits of interactive games and how they can help everyone stay engaged in a group environment.

#ZigyasawGlobalWarming

On June 1, 2017, United States President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. would cease all participation in the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change mitigation
After seeing this news, I was disheartened to see the most powerful president of a very powerful developed country refusing to accept the reality. Just occurred, we as responsible global citizens should do something about climate change or global warming as some call it. After traveling around the US and India, I started realizing that temperatures are rising everywhere. Winters do not feel like winter anymore in some cases, summers just become too hot to handle, and even in rainy seasons, it becomes uncomfortable at times.
Incidentally my elder one was in 7th grade at the time and she had a chapter on Global warming in her Social studies. Looking into the causes, slowly started realizing the side effects of global warming – reduced green cover, shortage of groundwater, etc. During research, we found that Global warming means that Antarctica and Greenland ice sheets are melting and the oceans are expanding. The term “global warming” was created by Wallace Smith Broecker. Recent climate change would still cause a 6-meter (20 ft) sea-level rise even if greenhouse gas emissions were reduced in 2015 per a scientific paper in Science.[15][16]

Studies show that Global warming is a slow and steady rise in Earth’s surface temperature. Temperatures today are 0.74 °C (1.33 °F) higher than 150 years ago. Many scientists say that in the next 100–200 years, temperatures might be up to 6 °C (11 °F) higher than they were before the effects of global warming were discovered.
Low-lying areas such as BangladeshFlorida, the Netherlands, and other areas face massive flooding.
In a nutshell, whether you are one day born child or old enough to go to the grave, we all are getting impacted by this issue every single day. I thought we would create an educational puzzle so children can learn while playing. More importantly, we decided to state some obvious things so they become aware and start thinking about how they can help in their capacity.
Another thought was today a lot of world leaders talk about protectionism. However, we have this one challenge and opportunity to cross all borders of nations, religions, casts, and languages and do something for our own selves and Mother Nature.
Hence our punch line.

From Passion Project to Global Partner: The Story of Linguidoor and its Founder

We all know the importance of language in communication. But everyone does not know all the languages, right?

Well, whether you are an individual or a company, language barriers can stop you from growing in any given field. In such scenarios, a translator is useful to communicate.

In this article, we will look into the journey of Linguidoor and the insights shared by Rishi Anand, the Founder of Linguidoor. Let’s dive in!

When and how did you start?

In 2017, Linguidoor was founded. Although globalization has opened avenues for expansion and exchange among countries, language still remains a barrier to expression. What was your inspirational moment for this business idea?

Language has always been one of the most empowering as well as the most limiting factor for businesses. On one hand, it stems a sense of understanding and enables you to reach out to customers and, subsequently, convert them.

However, on the other hand, diversity can be a barrier to communication. In order to tackle this limitation, business professionals have always been on the lookout for a solution that enables them to get past this barrier.

It was 2018, and the podcasting landscape was still nascent, especially in the realm of Hindi marketing content. But Piyush saw an opportunity, a gap that needed to be filled. Without the luxury of high-end equipment, without a dedicated recording space, he began. No mic, no camera – just pure passion.

The initial days were filled with challenges. Recording in a shared space meant dealing with background noises, interruptions, and the occasional roommate banter. But Piyush was undeterred. He believed in the power of content, in the stories he wanted to share, and in the knowledge he wished to impart.

Fast forward to today, and “The Piyush Kukreja Show” stands as a testament to his dedication and vision. The podcast has featured a who’s who of the entrepreneurial and digital world. Top entrepreneurs like Avi Arya have graced the show, sharing their insights and journeys. Investors like Arjun Vaidya have provided valuable perspectives on the business landscape. Community leaders such as Sourabh Goyal and content creators like Janhvi Singh & Shreya Jaiswal have added diverse voices to the podcast’s rich tapestry.

Today, the show boasts a proper setup, a far cry from its boat earphone days. But while the equipment has changed, the essence remains the same. It’s still driven by Piyush’s insatiable curiosity, his commitment to his listeners, and his desire to make a difference.

“The Piyush Kukreja Show” is more than just a podcast; it’s a journey. A journey of a young man from Nashik who dared to dream, who dared to start with what he had, and who proved that passion, above all, is the key to success.

For those looking for inspiration, for a sign to start their journey, Piyush’s story serves as a beacon. It’s a reminder that beginnings, no matter how humble, can lead to incredible destinations. All it takes is a dream and the will to chase it.

Starting in 2021, ElectricPe has been working to create a single, trusted platform for EV charging to meet India’s growing demand for Electric Vehicle infrastructure. With an expected 5 million charging stations in India, we have set out to help people discover charging stations and seamlessly transact with them. India’s net-zero goals can be achieved partially through electric vehicles by diminishing tailpipe emissions – hence the adoption of EVs is essential to this goal.

A large part of this is the need for infrastructure and ease of use. That’s where ElectricPe comes in. As a B2C EV charging and demand generation app, ElectricPe offers EV users a one-stop platform that ensures they have access to charging at the click of a button. Think Uber, but for EV charging!

The Founders and Organization :

Co-founders Avinash Sharma and Raghav Rohila are technology entrepreneurs who met at Ola and came together in May 2021 to create ElectricPe. This was spurred on by a shared passion for electric mobility and a drive to create India’s most trusted charging solution.

Avinash Sharma, CEO and Co-Founder, was recognized as a FICCI Young Leader in 2019 and has been instrumental in the development of India’s EV ecosystem. With over 11 years of experience in technology startups and shared mobility, Avinash was able to use his experience to identify the gap in the market and spearhead India’s green revolution through an accessible, trusted, and tech-enabled platform.

Raghav is committed to driving India’s green revolution through his strong focus on creating a seamless, user-friendly offering as Co-Founder and CPO. Using his prior experience as Co-Founder of Xyloop and Chief of Staff to the COO at Ola, Raghav was able to define ElectricPe’s products and offerings to the heights it is at today.

The Inspiration :

In 2021, it was apparent that EVs were very likely to become the dominant mode of mobility. A strong push for new vehicles in the market and supportive government policies also helped this along. In all of this, the elephant in the room was the rising fuel costs. We set out to create a solution to the problem of infrastructure when it came to EVs.

In 2019, there wasn’t an “all-in-one” solution the same way there is now with ElectricPe. Instead of having to download multiple apps and constantly worry about range anxiety or incomplete infrastructure, ElectricPe has bridged the gap with a single app for all EVs. The name, ElectricPe, came as a natural extension of our company’s vision: ‘Ab India Chalega ElectricPe,’ i.e., Now India will move on Electric.

Funding & Growth :

November 2021 – Seed Round led by Blume Ventures and Micelio Fund. In total, we have raised ~$3 million and includes investments from notable Angel Investors: Anshuman Bapna (Terra.do), Anupam Mittal (Shaadi.com), Arjun Ravi Sheth (Partner at Anchorage Capital Partners), Ashish Goel (Urban Ladder), Bhuvan Gupta (OfBusiness), Jasminder Singh (Nowfloats), Khadim Batti & Vara Kumar (Whatfix), Mukul Rustagi (Classplus), Murthy Aradhi (Whishworks), Nikheel Kamble, Pallav Singh (Numen), Ramakant Sharma of Livspace (LOGX Venture Partners), Relentless VC, Saurabh Aggarwal (Fitso), Soumitra Mishra (Claro Energy), Supermorpheus, Tonmoy Shingal (Mettl)  to name a few.

January 2023 – Pre-Series A round of $5 million. The funding round was led by notable investors like Green Frontier Capital, Blume Ventures, and Micelio Fund and also saw participation from Dubai-based NB Ventures, Anchorage Capital Partners, Supermorpheus, and Climate Angels.

As of September 2023, we are well-capitalized to meet our goals. We believe in stage-by-stage capitalization, as it focuses on building for the end customer in accordance with the stage of growth we are at.

Additionally, we have been working to create a solution for Bangalore first. By creating expertise in this market, we can utilize our learnings and move forward in other markets in a composed and strategic manner. Currently, we have over 15,000 charge points across Bangalore and an additional 5,000 spread across other cities. We aim to have 50,000 charge points by next year and 100,000 following that.  We have also partnered with NoBroker, JSW, Electric One, and Hero Electric, a few of the most prominent players in their respective domains, to expand our EV charging network. To date, the ElectricPe app has 100,000 downloads between the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store.

Electricpe Team

Challenges & Opportunities :

At ElectricPe, we are focused on the standardization and the upliftment of the customer experience. Finding chargers is only the first step. After that, the charger must be functional, there must be a charge point operator to assist you, and it must charge you fairly. There are reports of chargers across the country that are faulty, don’t have the correct plugs, are calibrated to the wrong settings, missing parts, and many more issues.

This is a huge gap in India’s EV infrastructure and one that has to be addressed. Our challenge was to take the substandard experience of EV charging and make it consistent across the board. To provide working, updated infrastructure, alongside partnering with competent charge point operators to create a seamless, straightforward experience that kept customers coming back – building the most important aspect of the interaction, which is trust.

The trust we have been able to foster within the EV ecosystem has earned us accolades in the space, such as:

  • The Frost & Sullivan’s 2022 Indian Competitive Strategy Innovation and Leadership Award (For EV Charging Solution Provider)
  • YourStory’s Tech30 Most Promising Indian Startups 2022
  • The Only Indian Company to be in the Top 10 of the Energy Tech Challengers 2022
  • Accelcity’s Top 100 Companies Resilience Challenge 2022

Our Hook-up Point :

At ElectricPe, we have refined our approach to software to create a simple, direct offering. We took this offering and made it free and interoperable for all EV chargers. For every OEM, you had to download a separate app that would interact with their charging management software (CMS) for payments and accessibility. ElectricPe is the first in the industry to make our seamless CMS available for free, and we have exciting partnerships coming up with some of India’s biggest charger manufacturers to create a consistent, one-stop experience for all EV users.

Inspiration :

Avinash often mentions that his approach to ElectricPe has always been people first. This continues with his source of inspiration, which for him is his team. Their eagerness and collective commitment push him to innovate and create an environment of trust and determination, allowing everyone to create the best versions of themselves at ElectricPe.  He also mentioned that if the distinctly Indian spirit of “Jugaad” was a person, they would be his inspiration

Driven by the ambition to become a pivotal force in the ad tech industry, GreedyGame embarked on an inspirational journey that would lead to the creation of their groundbreaking product, PubScale. The team at GreedyGame recognized two pressing needs within the ad ecosystem: publishers struggling with effective marketing and monetization and limited resources hindering the development of powerful monetization tools.

PubScale was conceived as the solution to these challenges, a platform designed to seamlessly integrate ad monetization, user acquisition tools, revenue optimization, and analytics tools. This brainchild aimed to empower publishers while allowing them to focus on content creation and app development.

At the helm of GreedyGame, Arpit Jain, the CEO and Founder, brought a wealth of entrepreneurial experience and a passion for technology and marketing. Arpit Chaudhary assumed the role of CTO, spearheading technological innovation. Drawing from their collective experiences at PayPal, Samsung, and Octro, their expertise became the bedrock of GreedyGame’s success.

PubScale: Where Technology Meets Monetization

PubScale rapidly ascended to become India’s first AI-powered app growth platform. It brought together monetization and user acquisition tools under one roof, streamlining operations for publishers and advertisers alike. Powered by advanced data analytics, PubScale revolutionized ad targeting, ensuring that every impression counted. PubScale’s user-friendly dashboard empowered publishers with valuable insights, facilitating informed decisions and enhancing user engagement metrics.

GreedyGame’s journey was characterized by its adaptability. Evolving industry norms, such as the phasing out of cookies and shifts in advertiser budget allocations, prompted the company to innovate in targeting techniques and diversify platforms beyond reliance on giants like Google.

“In our journey, we’ve embraced challenges as catalysts for innovation. As industry norms evolved, we adapted by redefining targeting strategies and diversifying platforms,” stated Arpit Jain, CEO of GreedyGame.

“GreedyGame’s vision revolves around empowering developers, ensuring seamless user experiences, and staying at the forefront of ad tech. Challenges define our journey, and innovation is our response,” he added.

Partnerships with industry giants like Reliance Games, Caffeine Inc., Pixalate, and Amanotes further validated GreedyGame’s far-reaching impact. The company’s achievements were also recognized by The Economic Times, The Financial Times, and the e4m Real-Time Programmatic Advertising Awards. With approximately $1.2 million in funding from multiple angel investors, this startup seized opportunities and overcame challenges in the dynamic world of mobile advertising.

Looking Forward: A Vision Beyond

GreedyGame’s path forward is illuminated by the desire to provide even more tools for publishers, offer AI-powered insights, and expand globally. The ambition is clear: to become the ultimate one-stop solution for publisher needs.

Through PubScale, GreedyGame is transforming the lives of app developers. What began as an effort to empower the overlooked grew into a platform that enabled developers to earn, stand out, and thrive in the programmatic landscape.

As each day concludes at GreedyGame, it marks the dawn of endless possibilities for app publishers. The story of PubScale is etched into the annals of ad tech, serving as a testament to empowerment, innovation, and the pursuit of a brighter, more connected future.

A Journey to Success: The Inspiring Story of Explore Water Sports

Explore Watersports
Start-up NameExplore Watersports
HeadquartersGoa
FounderAnkit Kumar
SectorTraveltech
Founded2016
Websitehttps://www.explorewatersports.in/
Ankit Kumar: Founder of Explore Watersports
Founder of Explore Watersports: Ankit Kumar

Due to their therapeutic benefits and capacity to reduce workplace stress, water sports have seen exponential growth across the globe. As per the Economic Times, in 2021, approximately 33.08 lakh domestic and 0.22 lakh foreign tourists will choose Goa as their tourist destination, consequently boosting the water sports industry. Despite the unorganized nature of this sector, a successful company has been built on the basis of providing high-quality service. Explore Watersports® serves as an example of how crucial client happiness is to being successful in the competitive space of adventure water sports.

The Origin: A highly loved bad experience

Ankit Kumar founded Explore Watersports®, Goa, to address the challenges faced by customers in the growing adventure tourism sector in India. His SCUBA diving experience in Goa in 2012 was a horror story. When operators did not deliver what was promised and showed no accountability, he realized that this unorganized sector needed to get more streamlined and accountable.

To provide a solution to this problem, he started EWS in 2016, which is a well-known brand in the water sports sector today. Explore Watersports®, Goa was born. By creating an online platform, it started offering handpicked activities like SCUBA diving, kayaking, and cruising to customers. In a very short time, the company became popular among tourists and adventure enthusiasts and started receiving a lot of positive reviews and ratings. Thus, the bad experience began all this, and I love that bad experience.

Expansion: Diving deeper

Gradually, the company went on to add new activities as they dived deeper into the problems, and customers were happy with the premium service they got. Happy customers not only spread the word amongst their friends and relatives, but some of them also came back and requested the company to arrange HR events for their businesses. This opened up a new avenue, and EWS started catering to corporate clients as well.

EWS has served 21,000 customers and 15 corporate clients so far and counting. With its consistent growth, the company is soon launching a couple of brand-new water sports in the Indian market. Presently, the launch is in the phase of approvals and procurement, but the day isn’t far when adventure junkies will travel to Goa to experience Jet-surfboard and underwater scootering.

Challenges: The High and Low Tides

The journey hasn’t been that easy, though. Seasonal businesses have their own challenges. Most water sports are in operation for barely 6 months, and many times, this time shrinks because of unforeseen reasons like storms, the early arrival of the monsoon, etc. To add to the adversities, a pandemic hit the world, causing the company to face financial challenges when it was still in its infancy.

With sinking funds, fixed costs to pay, and uncertain tourist returns, Ankit had to close the company. He moved back to his hometown to survive and to wait for favorable times. He utilized the difficult time to learn digital marketing and skills that could be used for developing businesses in the future.

The pandemic subsided; people started moving around in a restricted manner, but tourism still wasn’t flourishing. The inner calling was motivating Mr. Kumar to revive the infant, who was left behind and was waiting to start walking. The urge was so strong that he decided to go back to Goa.

Comback: Swim against the storm

Explore Watersports
Explore Watersports

Despite the economic downturn, with not much cash and support, he moved back to Goa, as he didn’t want to give up without fighting. There was no team, no budget for online marketing, and very little from personal savings that would help him sustain himself for only a month in the city. But what he was left with was willpower, optimism, and the network he had created in the earlier years.

A lone fighter, he started working relentlessly on all fronts. He revamped the website to create some buzz and started attending customer calls right from 7 in the morning until late at night.

Made conversions, looked after the activities, and also provided customer support. It was a good idea to be a vendor for this season, as being an operator was a costly proposition.

Success: Conquering the Sea

Word-of-mouth publicity paid off during these challenging times as customers started booking activities. Customers kept the show going, and that season closed with good revenue (Financial Year 2020–2021, Revenue: INR 90 Lacs). The company had got a new lease of life, and with all the sweet-bitter experiences, the founder had become stronger to return as an operator the very next year.

Explore Watersports 2.0 is now a successful survival story that can inspire many. The company is set to generate 1.35 Cr this season, and there are a few dynamic projects in the pipeline.

Mr. Kumar, the founder of EWS, says,

” Resilience, handwork, and problem-solving skills can carve the path to success.”

When and how did you start?

We started MyWays.ai in 2020 with a focus on addressing the issues of job scarcity and industry readiness among tech freshers in Tier 2 and 3 colleges in India. The idea was sparked by witnessing the struggle firsthand in the case of our elder brother and other capable students. Recognizing both a social problem and a business opportunity, we initially aimed to help these tech freshers become experienced by providing specialized training.

As we delved deeper into the industry, we realized that the hiring process was often biased and opaque, so we expanded our mission to make hiring more transparent, merit-based, and data-driven. This led to the creation of our MyGurukul Program and the development of internal tools that eventually matured into a suite of products designed to streamline the hiring process. Our continued growth and evolution have been fueled by our commitment to innovation and our determination to make a meaningful difference in the tech hiring landscape.

How did you come up with the idea? Your inspirational moment

The inspirational moment for MyWays.ai came when we observed the struggles faced by our elder brother and other talented candidates from top Tier-2 and 3 colleges who were not getting placed. Despite having the skills, they faced an industry-readiness problem. This wasn’t just a personal problem; it was a widespread issue affecting many fresh graduates. The discrepancy between applicants’ abilities and what the industry was looking for, coupled with a cumbersome and often biased hiring process, struck us as both a social problem and a business opportunity.

We saw the potential to make a real difference by addressing these challenges. Our strong determination to transform tech freshers into experienced freshers and to create a more transparent, efficient, and fair hiring process led us to the founding of MyWays.ai. It was a mission-driven approach that evolved from a genuine desire to contribute positively to the tech industry and the lives of young professionals.

Brief about the organization and founding members

Read More on Myways.ai about their startup journey

The detailed journey, like what all you want to share with readers

The business idea for MyWays.ai began to take shape in 2020 when we identified a significant mismatch in the tech job market. We observed that there were far too many applicants for tech positions, but paradoxically, very few of them possessed the required skills or experience to clear even the preliminary screening. This glaring issue wasn’t just a statistical observation; it was a real challenge faced by countless tech freshers struggling to find their footing in the industry. It was also a problem for companies that needed to sift through a sea of applications to find the right talent.

We envisioned a system where tech freshers could be trained and transformed into experienced freshers, ready to take on real-world problems instead of working on the same set of projects available online. But we didn’t stop there. As we delved deeper, we recognized that the traditional hiring process was opaque and often biased. This led us to launch the MyGurukul Program to train tech talent and place them in companies suited to their newly developed skills. We then broadened our scope to become tech partners and hiring enablers for these companies, leading to development of our suite of SaaS tools.

Challenges and Opportunities/ Marketing Strategies

There is the challenge of differentiating products and services in a crowded space, keeping up with ever-changing technology, and convincing potential clients to adopt new hiring methods. Continuous learning and development can also foster long-term relationships. Marketing strategies are geared toward leveraging these opportunities and overcoming challenges. I (Dheeraj Kumar) vividly remember the day I walked across the stage in Allahabad, holding my graduation certificate and my heart brimming with dreams of making a difference in technology. Little did I know that this was just the beginning of an awe-inspiring adventure that would take me from one milestone to another, shaping me into the person I am today.

Dheeraj Kumar receiving Award

After leaving the hallowed halls of academia in 2012 after getting post-graduated from BIT Mesra, I ventured into the corporate world, joining NTT DATA in Gurgaon, where I was immersed in the realm of technology. My time there was invaluable, and I learned valuable lessons that would fuel my passion for innovation and progress.

The journey didn’t end there, as fate led me to Mahindra Comviva as a Software Engineer in Bangalore, where I had the opportunity to delve deeper into the world of data and technology. This experience further stoked the fire within me to explore the uncharted territories of technology and create something truly revolutionary.

In 2015, the stars aligned, and I found myself in Ranchi, Jharkhand, where I embraced a new role as a faculty member. This marked a turning point in my life, as it allowed me to combine my love for education with my insatiable curiosity for technology. Little did I know that my desire to make a difference would take me on a path I could never have imagined.

It was in 2015 that I took a leap of faith and founded my first startup, “RiseHealthy.” Fueled by a vision to revolutionize the health and wellness industry through technology-driven solutions, I poured my heart and soul into the venture. The recognition it received from the Government of Bihar and the prestigious award from the Chief Minister reaffirmed my belief that I was on the right track.

But the hunger for innovation did not stop there. In 2016, I ventured into new territory, establishing “IoT Laboratories.” This endeavor aimed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. Over the years, we trained thousands of students, empowering them with cutting-edge tech skills, and witnessing their growth filled me with immense pride.

Dheeraj Kumar speaking at Pitch 4 Bihar 2016
Dheeraj Kumar

The universe seemed to acknowledge my dedication, and in 2019, I got Selected by StartUp Hub (MeitY), Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Govt. of India, as a mentor. After that, I got an opportunity to serve as a mentor with NiTi Ayog, Govt. of India. Meanwhile, I also got the opportunity to contribute as a Mentor for the DeshkeMentor Program by Govt. of Delhi. Some of the rewards that I got from watching the Startups that I mentor are succeeding and growing, making a positive impact on society through technology, learning new skills and technologies, expanding my network and connections, and having fun along the way.

I would say the year 2019 was a thrilling year for sure because, in the same year, I was Selected as a professor at Amity University, where I mentored hundreds of Students about Technology, entrepreneurship, innovation, and many more. I believe that mentoring is a way of giving back to society (What you owe from your journey ) and inspiring the next generation of Entrepreneurs

The journey wasn’t without its challenges, but my passion for technology and entrepreneurship kept me going. Along the way, I amassed various copyrights and patents, securing our innovations and enabling us to stride confidently into uncharted waters.

In 2022, the seeds of a new venture were sown, and “ETM Bikes” came into being. With a vision to redefine urban commuting through eco-friendly and technologically advanced electric bikes, we soared to great heights. The collaborations with world giants further solidified our position in the industry.

Throughout this rollercoaster ride, I never ceased my pursuit of knowledge. I am pursuing a Ph.D. in Machine Intelligence, a subject close to my heart. Combining academia and entrepreneurship has been challenging, but it has also been a journey of growth and fulfillment.

To aspiring entrepreneurs, I say this: “The one who falls and get up is so much stronger than one who never fell”

Embrace your curiosity, follow your heart, and never shy away from taking risks. Your journey may be fraught with obstacles, but it is through determination and resilience that true success is achieved.

As I look back at the past ten years, I am humbled by the opportunities I have been blessed with and the people who have supported me. My story is a testament to the power of dreams and the strength that lies within us to transform those dreams into reality. With technology as my compass and passion as my driving force, I will continue to explore, innovate, and leave a lasting impact on the world.
